About the collections and the future of the website. . .

It has to be said that this web page does not do justice to the collections housed in the Museum, and a visit is strongly recommended. It should also be said that this is early days for the web site and there are plans in motion to expand it considerably, and include a large number of high resolution images of the collections. In addition to this, there will also be much more expansive descriptions of the collections and artefacts included here.

The Balch Room

The Balch Room houses a unique collection of artefacts, the bulk of which were collected on and around Mendip. The collection includes the skull of a brown bear (right) discovered at Wookey Hole, a large number of stone-age tools, and an impressive collection of Iron Age artefacts discovered by Balch during his many years of excavation at Wookey Hole caves.

The Geology Room

The Geology Room houses an important collection of minerals and fossils, many of which originated in the Mendip area. Included here are ferns from the Carboniferous, fish from the Jurassic, and cave pearls from Mendip.

The Sampler Room

As well as the Archaeological and Geological Collection the Museum houses many social history artifacts.
This includes a collection of samplers dating from the mid eighteenth century, displayed in the Eveleen Perkins Sampler Room.

The Library

The Library houses a collection of books, papers and proceedings of local and national interest, and is a valuable store of knowledge.
