Guided Tours of Wells Museum

Wells and Mendip Museum is offering free guided tours on the first Saturday of each month. Visitors will learn fascinating facts about the building, a former canonical house, dating from the Elizabethan period.  Just some of the artefacts on display include Roman lead ingots (or pigs) found on the Mendips, caving finds from Herbert Balch’s collection and the Witch of Wookey. Visitors should be at the museum by 12pm or 2pm (2008 entry tickets must be presented or purchased).

If you would like to volunteer to be trained as a guide, please contact Georgina Smith on 01749 673477 or email wellsmuseum@ukonline.co.uk.

Congratulations Wells and Mendip Museum!

We are delighted to report that in July 2007, Wells and Mendip Museum was awarded Accreditation status by the Museum’s, Libraries and Archives Council. This is the result of many months hard work by museum Trustees, managers, staff and volunteers, so well done to all who were involved.

Many people have asked exactly what this means for the future of the museum. The MLA is the national development agency for museums, libraries and archives, advising the government on policy and priorities for the sector. To be accredited, means that the museum measures up, meeting guidelines on how it is run, how it looks after its collections and the services it provides to its visitors.

So with these high standards having been recognised, the museum is in a better position when applying for funding, such as grant application. It is better able to project itself positively to all outside organisations, who may be involved with developing and supporting the museum in the future.

The hard work doesn’t stop now though. It is just the start of a continuing effort to improve what the museum has to offer by implementing our Forward Plan, so WATCH THIS SPACE!
